Why self-drive beats a cab in Jaisalmer
Most Rajasthan cities are compact enough that a cab makes sense. Jaisalmer isn't one of them.
The city itself is small — you can cross it in fifteen minutes. But almost everything people come here for sits outside it. Sam Sand Dunes is 42 km out. Kuldhara is 18 km. Longewala and Tanot are past the 120 km mark, on a border road with almost nothing in between. A hired driver charges by the day and, more to the point, decides when the day ends.
That last part is what actually changes the trip. The desert is worth seeing in two windows — the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset — and both sit outside a normal working shift. A self-drive car removes the negotiation entirely. You leave at 5:40am for Kuldhara because you feel like it, and you stay at the dunes until the light is properly gone.
| Self-drive rental | Cab with driver | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sets the timing | You | The driver's shift |
| Sunrise & after-dark stops | No extra cost | Usually billed as an extra day |
| Changing plans mid-day | Free | Renegotiated |
| Fuel | Yours | Usually in the quote |
| Tipping & haggling | None | Common |
| Best for | 2–5 day trips, photographers, families | Airport transfers, non-drivers |
The honest exception: if you're here for one night and doing nothing but the fort and a dune camp, a cab is simpler. Self-drive earns its cost from about day two onward.
What a self-drive car costs in Jaisalmer
Four vehicle classes, one daily rate each, 200 km included per day.
These are our current published rates. Each is a 24-hour period counted from the moment you take the keys, not a calendar day — pick up at 4pm and the day runs to 4pm tomorrow.
| Vehicle | Per day | 7 days | 30 days | Seats |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hatchback | ₹1,400 | ₹8,800 | ₹34,000 | 4 |
| Sedan | ₹1,900 | ₹12,000 | ₹46,000 | 5 |
| SUV / Compact 4x4 | ₹3,100 | ₹19,500 | ₹75,000 | 5 |
| Open Jeep | ₹3,800 | ₹24,000 | ₹92,000 | 4 |
Peak season (October–February) rates can move slightly. See the full rate card and outstation tariff →
The extras, spelled out
- Beyond 200 km/day — ₹8/km. The odometer is logged at pickup and drop-off, so there's nothing to argue about at the end.
- Security deposit — ₹3,000 to ₹5,000, refundable. Hatchbacks and sedans sit at the lower end. Returned on the spot at drop-off, minus fuel and any damage past normal wear.
- Fuel — at cost. Full tank out, full tank back. Return it short and the difference plus a small refill fee comes off the deposit.
- Late return — ₹150/hour, capped at one day's rate. An hour late doesn't become a full extra day.
- Delivery inside Jaisalmer city — free, including the airport and railway station. Outstation delivery is quoted flat, usually from ₹500.
A three-day SUV trip covering the city, Kuldhara, Khaba, Sam and one border run comes to roughly ₹9,300 in rental and around 450–500 km of driving, plus diesel. Split across four people it lands well under three days of hired cabs.
Documents and eligibility
Short list. Bring the originals, not photos of them.
- A valid driving licence, held for at least one year.
- Minimum age 21.
- One government photo ID — Aadhaar or passport.
- The refundable security deposit, in cash or UPI.
- International visitors: your home-country licence plus an International Driving Permit. Get the IDP before you fly — it can't be issued here.
That's the whole file. There's no minimum rental period, no credit-card-only rule, and no requirement to be a resident of Rajasthan.
Which car to book
The choice comes down to how far past the city you plan to go.
Hatchback — right if you're staying inside Jaisalmer and doing short hops to Bada Bagh or Amar Sagar. Easiest to park near the fort lanes, cheapest to fuel, and completely adequate on the tarmac out to Kuldhara.
Sedan — the pick for a couple doing a mix of city and highway. More comfortable over the long straight stretches toward Jodhpur or Bikaner, and quieter at speed.
SUV / compact 4x4 — our most booked car, and the sensible default if Sam, Khuri, Tanot or Longewala are on your list. Higher ground clearance matters on the rougher approach roads, and five people plus luggage fit properly.
Open jeep — a specific choice for a specific trip. Best vehicle here for photography and for the dune-access roads at golden hour. Not the one you want for a 250 km border run in May.
How booking and handover works
From message to keys in hand, usually under an hour on the day.
1. Send your dates. Message the fleet type and your pickup and return dates on WhatsApp. We confirm what's free, usually within the hour.
2. Show ID at pickup. Licence, government ID, deposit. Nothing is signed before you've seen the car.
3. Walk the car. We go around it with you and log the odometer and fuel level together. Photograph anything you want recorded — good renters do this and we'd rather you did.
4. Drive. Collection at the airport, the railway station, your hotel, or our counter at Fort Parking. Handover outside counter hours is arranged in advance.
Three routes worth the rental
Route 1 — City morning (under 10 km total)
Gadisar Lake at sunrise, then the three havelis — Patwon Ki, Nathmal Ji, Salim Singh Ki — which sit within a ten-minute walk of each other. Park once near the main road and do all three on foot. Finish at Vyas Chhatri about forty minutes before sunset for the best view of the fort in full.
Route 2 — The ruins loop (about 70 km round trip)
Leave at 6:30am. Kuldhara first, while it's still empty. Khaba Fort is ten minutes further. Then push on to Sam Sand Dunes for the afternoon and stay for the sunset. Back in the city by 8pm for dinner. This is the day that makes people glad they didn't hire a driver.
Route 3 — The border run (roughly 280 km round trip)
A full day, and the one route where the car type genuinely matters. Jaisalmer War Museum on the way out, then Tanot Mata Temple, then Longewala War Memorial. Leave before 7am, fill the tank completely before you go, and don't plan anything for the evening.
